MONGOL RALLY TEAM
The Mongol Rally
This summer, dental students Utkarsh Dandekar (Kash), Ravi Pancholi and Kalpesh Shamji drove 10,000 miles through 17 countries all for charity.
Their initial target was to raise £4,000 for charities Delete Blood Cancer, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Cool Earth. Within days of starting the trip, they not only met their target but exceeded it and still continues to grow.
The starting point was Goodwood Racecourse – England and the finishing line was Ulan-Ude in Russia. From roads, dirt tracks, streams and deserts, they did it all. Not in a high terrain 4x4 vehicle but a small 22yr old VW Polo with no A/C.
They faced many difficulties during their 6-week journey and there were plenty of scary times.
From passing through political disputes occurring in Turkey. Getting stuck in sandy desserts. Breaking down on the Afghanistan border and hearing gun shots. Being stuck on mountain ‘roads’ 4000 meters above sea level with poor oxygen levels. Encountering lethal spiders and unintentionally sleeping next to old soviet minefields.
Kash – I’m ecstatic and proud that we’ve managed to complete such a challenge. The best part of the trip was exploring beautiful remote locations - like the Pamir Highway and parts of the Silk Road.
A bonus for me is that we did it all for a wonderful cause. I’m happy to have raised so much money for our charities. I want to thank all of our friends, family, sponsors and beautiful strangers who have helped it making this happen – we couldn’t have done it without you.
Kalpesh - During the rally we experienced many breakdowns, various mishaps and were under tight time constraints. All of this made the rally physically and mentally draining. However, driven by all those who donated and sponsored us we overcame it all. Once we reached the finishing line in Ulan-Ude there was a huge sense of relief closely followed by an immense feeling of accomplishment.
It is amazing to have raised such a large sum for charity and I greatly thank all of the individuals who contributed and helped us along the way.
Ravi – I'm proud of the team and the car for everything we've achieved. It was amazing to meet new people, experience new cultures and explore what the world has to offer.
Not only did we have such an amazing journey, we've also been privileged to have got such great support from friends, family and all those who helped us on our way in raising money for these three worthwhile charities.
Their new target is now £8,000 and are within close distance of reaching it. All proceedings will go to charity and for a wonderful cause.
Please donate now.
