Dr Alun Rees BDS, The Dental Business Coach, graduated from Newcastle University and started his career as an oral surgery resident, before working as an associate in a range of different practices. With this solid foundation, Alun went on to launch two practices in the space of just 15 months, a challenge in the toughest economic conditions. After years of hard work Alun finally sold his dental business in 2005.
Alun's background and experience give him a strong understanding of what others go through to build a successful practice. He has seen many different approaches and learned his own lessons in the real world. He is an accepted authority of practice organisation and management and has written and presented widely on the subject.

DentSoc's second composite masterclass was a massive success. Our BDS4 students were lucky enough to learn how to do an aesthetic class IV composite restoration, employing advanced techniques such as tints, layering and dyes. A special thanks to Dr Subir Banerji, Dr Shamir Mehta and our sponsors Coltene, Garrison, 3M, Dental Protection and DDU. We're looking forward to the next one!
With particularly unique interests Dr Ahlowalia has worked alongside a wide range of health care workers from hypnotherapists, clinical and behavioural psychologists running workshops for the dysfunctional, special educators working with autistics and dyslexics to of course dental surgeons as well as cosmetic & plastic surgeons.
In 2007 Dr Ahlowalia was selected to be the face of dentistry for the show Extreme Makeover UK taking on some of the most complex dental reconstructions ever seen on TV. As well as having taught all aspects of technical and comprehensive dental care at The Pankey Institute, Florida & for Spear Education at The Scottsdale Centre for Dentistry, Arizona, Dr Ahlowalia now lectures internationally on the psychological aspects and art of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery both dental & medical & how to combine that ‘art ‘ with the ‘science’ of facial aesthetic surgery, skills that use entirely different parts of the brain. It is an indescribable feeling to have won the Aaron Gurmail award this year.
Currently many of us encounter daily problems, the stresses of work and exams, but there are others struggling to provide even basic food for themselves and their families. In London alone for example we encounter dozens of homeless individuals every single week. By doing outreach and showing kindness, I just hope it will inspire others to realise the endless potential that we all have, to easily help others. Most of all, it will benefit someone who really needs it an immeasurable way. A candle never loses its light by lighting another and there is always someone out there who needs help. I strongly feel it is our responsibility, to together ensure others receive the same support and opportunities that we may do, to live happy full lives, just as many of us are blessed to be leading right now. I am incredibly grateful to the King's College London Dental School, the Dental Society and to all those who voted for this prestigious award. It serves as a testament that we should all strive to be the best we can towards others, just as Aaron was, and that selflessness, compassion and kindness, are what contribute towards giving life a true meaning and a purpose. In this presentation Susan will explain how an understanding of some of the most basic prosthetic techniques is of paramount importance when restoring patients with large implant restorations, reducing the chance of complications and increasing patient satisfaction. She will show examples of her approach to full arch implant prosthodontics as a life changing treatment for patients in situations from minimal jaw resorption to where there is extreme atrophy. Royal Navy Dental CadetshipKarolyn John, a fourth year dental student at KCL, has recently been awarded a cadetship with the Royal Navy. The prestigious bursary is awarded to a very select few successful applicants who pass the Royal Navy’s Admiralty Interview Board (AIB), an intensive two day selection process involving formal interviews plus various mental and physical tasks. She will receive a salary from the Royal Navy for the final two years of study and the rank of Acting Surgeon Sub Lieutenant (D). “I am absolutely delighted and very proud to have been selected for this award” said Karolyn. “Alongside dentistry the Royal Navy has been a great interest of mine for some time and I am looking forward to combining the two in a challenging and rewarding career.”
Karolyn has been a keen member of the London University Royal Naval Unit (URNU) for the past three years which gives students an extremely good insight into naval life. Members get to experience a variety of maritime activities at sea aboard HMS Puncher, one of the navy’s 21 meter Archer class patrol ships, as well as being involved in a number of social events, both formal and informal throughout the university year. Before beginning the dental course Karolyn studied Anatomy, Developmental and Human Biology at King’s, achieving BSc (Hons) in 2013. |
